Medals and Coins

Room 21 students looked at some special Anzac commemorative coins. We saw that there are two soldiers on them. One is a New Zealand soldier. We had to work out where the other one was from. At first we thought he was a Turk, a Frenchman, an American or a German, but after we were given the hint 'ANZAC' one of our friends answered 'Australian'.

On the other side of the coin there is the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ms Bland showed us some replica World War 1 medals. We noticed that there is a man's portrait on one of them.

The man is King George. He was the King at the time the war started. Do you know how Queen Eluzabeth and King George are related?

Soldiers who went to the war at the beginning (in 1914-1915) received three medals.

The medals have names. From left to right, the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal.

Soldiers who went to war from 1916 onwards received only two medals...
