Clothed!

Earlier this term we talked about the things we have inside our bodies like lungs, heart and brain. We learned where those things are inside us.  We also talked about why we wear clothes. It has taken us a long time to make the clothes for our models but we finally finished them today!

Making sharks

We made our shark tissue boxes this afternoon. It took a bit longer than we expected but we all really enjoyed making them. Tomorrow we will add the eyes and then we will be able to take them home!

Mystery Bag

Finn brought the Mystery Bag to school today. He gave us 3 clues about what was inside the bag and then we got a chance to guess what the mystery object was. The clues really made us think about what was inside the bag!

Take 2

This afternoon we filmed the final scene for our school film 'Walk this Way!'

Aquarium

Our aquarium is finally complete!  The last of our little fish were hung up today.

Stories

Our stories are improving because we are including more information in them!

Helping Team NZ

We are not happy because our boat didn't speed in the races today. We tried to help our team by doing some 'grinding.'

Sounding out words

Some of us are beginning to learn how to sound out little words. Our teacher showed us a little word like 'go.'  She asked us what the first letter was then we made its sound. When we made the 'g' sound we put our hand up with our palm facing outwards. Next we made the 'o' sound but changed the direction of our palm. We did this to help us realise that 'go' is made up if two separate sounds. We will be doing lots more sounding out now.

Look who know their words!

Look at these clever readers who earned a treat for learning all the words on their Sight Word cards!

Who is heavier?

One little boy in our class believes that boys are heavier than girls. We did an experiment to see if he is right. Joe hopped on the scales. He weights 17 kg. Melanie got on next. She weighs 24 kg. was our little boy right that boys are heavier than girls?

New National Library Books

We got some new National Library books today in a little, but heavy box! The books are all about bees and other insects. We will be learning about them next term!

Congratulations Isabel!

Well done Isabel, you have made fantastic progress with your reading and sight words

America's Cup race stories

We watched an America's Cup race today then drew a picture of our boat with Oracle's boat. Here are some of our stories...

Caleb's great story

Today Caleb went to the principal's office ... For a good reason!  He wrote a great story about the America's Cup race!  We knew Mr Limbrick would love it!

Go Team New Zealand!

We were all set to watch the race this morning but then the wind picked up.  We will have to save our excitement for tomorrow.

Class photo shoot

We took a class photo this morning to send to Otto's Uncle Liam.  We have a lot of clowns in our class so it took about 15 takes before we got a good shot!

Look at our progress!

We have been doing reading testing this week.  The classes progress has been fantastic and we are proud of them all.  Come and check out our reading caterpillar to see how we are going.

Fish stories

We wrote some stories about fish today! Look at these good ones...

Learning to learn scissors

Ms Reid visited our class this afternoon to teach us how to cut with scissors. We know how to cut a straight line well. To cut a curved line we need to use a different technique. We have to open the blades as much as we can, put the paper inside then close them just a little at a time.  We have to practice this a lot as we found it quite hard!

We can count to 100

Isabel and Joe confidently count to 100!  They earned their mini trophy today.  Well done.

Insects in a jar

Aaron has brought in some insects in a container to show us. He also brought a spider and some eggs to show us.  We were very interested to learn about them.

Germs are growing

Compare our Petri dishes before we started our experiment with how they look now!

Looking for beginning sounds

In Reading we have been practicing looking at the first letter of words. Then we say the sound of that letter.

How germs are spread

We learnt that germs are spread easily from person to person. We did an experiment to prove how easy it is for germs to travel. We put some glitter in some hand sanitizer then our teacher squeezed some into her hand. She shook hands with Lachlan and some glitter went onto his hand!  He shook hands with another person and the glitter transferred to his hand too!

Little authors

We drew a picture about our weekend and wrote a story about it. Here are four great stories we want to share with you.

Writing a special letter

Otto was telling us about his Uncle Liam today. He was very proud of him!  It made us excited too!  We wrote a letter to ask Uncle Liam to visit us!

Casey Shapes

Before children learn to write letters they learn the shapes that make up a letter. We call them Casey Shapes!  Here are the shapes we're learning:

An 'a' is an 'open mouth' and a 'short stick' while an 'n' is a 'short stick' and a 'tunnel.'  You can talk about the Casey Shapes with your child!

Share Chair

We take turns to sit on the Share Chair. When it is our turn we are allowed to sit on the special green chair when it is mat time. We are also allowed to bring something from home to show the class! There is a special peg on our class list that tells us whose turn it is on the Share Chair.

Pupil of the week.

This week Room 19's pupil of the week is Joe.  Joe was awarded the certificate for always trying his best. Well done Joe!

Meeting a bearded dragon

We met a bearded dragon named Gloria today. Some of us touched him and found out that her skin is bumpy!  Gloria eats bugs and vegetables. When she is scared she will puff up, just like a puffer fish!

Finished portraits

Our portraits are finished!  Right now they are drying. We hope to find a space in our room to display them for you to see.

Best illustrators for week 7

Phoebe and Finn did a great job of illustrating our poem of the week.  We love their colouring!

Word champions for week 7

Eleven people knew all the Sight Words on their cards today!  That is the biggest number of champions we've ever had in a single week!!!!

Lesson about friendship

Our teachers are trying to help us be friends with everyone in the class. To illustrate the lesson she put some water in a bottle. This represented one person. Next, some oil was added. This represented another person. We know from a previous experience that oil and water do not mix.  Water always stays at the bottom of the bottle, the oil floats at the top.  They are not good friends. We don't want to be like that!

BUT... What would happen to our oil-water bottle if we added dye to it?  (The dye also represents a person in our little object lesson.). Well we were very surprised because the dye went to the bottom of the bottle and straight away mixed with the water!  This taught us that water and dye are very good friends. We want to be like that!

Shark predictions

We made a prediction today about a little 'growing' shark that our teacher bought us. We thought about how big our shark would grow if we put him in some water over the weekend.

Here is how our shark looked after the weekend of swimming!  It grew 6 times bigger!
