More free time fun
When we have free time we like making cities, towers and other creations but our favourite free time activity is playing on the top playground!
Learning letter Ee
We are learning about letter Ee. One of the activities we did this week was to find the letter Ee hidden with lots of other letters. We glued the Ee beside an earwig!
Celebrating Diwali
Look at the special treats Trisha bought to school today! These are for a special celebration called Diwali. We will learn more about it tomorrow.
Rice bubble slice
Today we learnt what a recipe is. We looked at the recipe for Rice Bubble Slice. The ingredients are: butter, honey, brown sugar, vanilla essence, and rice bubbles.
The children who were good listeners today went with Janine to make Rice Bubble Slice. She explained the difference between the measuring spoons and explained how to combine all the ingredients.
Writing letters
Lots of children in Room 18 have been learning to write letters. Look at some neat examples.
Showing appreciation
We are learning to show appreciation for the kind things people have done for us. We made a thank you card for a Airborne Honey who donated some honey to our school.

Karakia
We are learning a karakia in Te Reo to say together at the start of the day. It is a special karakia that asks that we have a sparkly day. This morning Leshay's nana helped us pronounce the words so that we say them correctly.

Making beehive piƱatas
We started to cover our balloons in a layer of newsprint. This weekend they will dry and then we will be able to add more layers. Our teacher wanted us to work as a team with our buddy. It was a good opportunity for us to show our teacher how we can share and take turns. When we have finished our paper mĆ¢chĆ© project we will have a beehive piƱata to hang on the tree in our room.
Otto performs
Otto brought his drumsticks to school today and gave us an impromptu performance! It was amazing to see him sing and drum simultaneously!
Bee Power
Mrs Tuck and Mrs Makani performed a little play today. In the play Mrs Tuck was a bee lover and Mrs Makani was a bee hater. She was complaining about how scary they are and that she doesn't like them. In the play we helped Mrs Makani to change her mind about bees! We helped her learn that bees are very important to our survival, and without them we would not have honey, baked beans, strawberry ice cream and tomato sauce! She loves bees now!

Making shades of blue
Ms Reid visited our class again today! She taught us how to make different shades of blue. Next week we will use this information to make the background for our 'bee' art!
Celebrating Mr Limbrick's anniversary
This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of Mr Limbrick's arrival at Arahoe School. We celebrated by wearing clothes that reflected his love of the ocean. At our special assembly Caleb stood up on behalf of our class to say "I like Mr Limbrick because he gave me a sticker when I wrote a good story."
The staff gave Mr Limbrick a present. It was a little waka to symbolize that we're part of a great team and have a strong leader. The children all helped to make a giant scrapbook to congratulate our principal for 20 years of hard work. At the staff morning tea he cut a special cake that had a picture of his boat on it!

Stories about the beekeeper
Here are some great stories that we wrote after today's visit from the beekeeper. Notice the key bee terminology that we used!
Mr Beekeeper
A beekeeper visited us today and brought a hive to show us. It was so interesting to watch the bees busily working together. Some of them were even carrying rubbish out of the hive.
Here are some things we learned:
Isabel - candles are made from wax, which comes from bees.
Dylan - a tool called a smoker is used to calm bees down.
Braden - bees carry rubbish eg squashed larvae out of the hive and drop it far away from it.
Bella - if a bee dies inside the hive, two bees will carry it out.
Noah - the queen lays a special egg that turns into the next queen bee. Royal Jelly is fed to queen bee pupae.
The Big Sad Wolf
We watched a great show called 'The Big Sad Wolf' performed by The New Zealand Playhouse. We were spellbound when the 'judge' tried to convict the big bad wolf of eating Red Riding Hood and for blowing down the three little pig's houses. Luckily there was a happy ending when the judge turned out to be the boy who cried wolf too many times!
Here's what we liked about the show:
Noah & Finn- I liked when the wolf sneezed on the boy who cried wolf making his clothes fall off. We saw his polka dot undies!
Caleb, Penelope & Dylan - I liked the song & dance at the end of the show 'Big glad wolf smiles' (which was to the tune of 'Gangnam Style').
Otto & Aaron C - I liked it when the wolf sneezed and the pig's houses fell down. (In the story the wolf had an allergy to straw and sticks causing him to sneeze a lot.)
Aaron B - I liked when Little Red Riding Hood 'granny-napped' Granny Hood.

Tasting honey
Honey comes in many colours! We learnt that the colour of the honey is dependent on the type of flower the bees visit. We sampled some rata and tiwari honey. Yummy!
