Daffodil Day

Today is Daffodil Day, a chance to help people who are sick with cancer.

Some of us bought a donation for the Cancer Society and got a daffodil to wear.

We talked about how the colour yellow is a bright, cheerful colour and that we are using yellow flowers to make sick people feel happy.

Look at the daffodil garden we made today.

We learnt how to attach several layers together using a split pin. We can add leaves to our daffodil garden next week.

Best Illustrators

Three children did amazing poem illustrations this week.

Pete the Cat stories

We wrote stories about Pete the Cat today.

iPad Photos

Some of us used the iPads to take photos of what we like to do during break time...

Then, we drew them on cubes to tell our story.

100 Dojo Points

Both our friends reached 100 Dojo Points this week for good behaviour, making good choices, being super listeners, great helpers and wonderful managers of their own work. They are outstanding!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to our Certificate Winner for this week. She has an amazing artistic talent. Her logo design has been printed on our class t-shirts which we will wear for our jingle performance.

Our Sight Words Champions

We have 9 Sight Words Champions this week! Well done!

Ara Teina Assembly

At our Ara Teina Assembly this morning we watched Room 15 perform their road safety jingle. They wore the t-shirts that they designed and printed.

We finished our Assembly off with Jump Jam. We danced to 'Happy!'

Creations

In our free time this afternoon some boys got into the craft boxes and created some very cool stuff.

Adding dice numbers

We did some tricky adding today. We had to roll a die and draw the numbers we rolled. Next we added the numbers up and wrote the answer.

Learning about South Korea

Ms Tan showed us a blog with the story of Mr Limbrick and Mrs Armstead's trip to South Korea!  They have visited some schools there. We saw a picture of them eating lunch. They had litter less lunch boxes!

Printing t-shirts

Our class' road safety logo was printed onto our t-shirts today. Here is the first t-shirt held by the artist who designed the logo!  We are giving her design two thumbs up!

To print the t-shirts we put a board inside it with a piece of newspaper. This was to ensure that the ink didn't go through to the back of the t-shirt.

Next we placed the screen printing frame with our stencil on the t-shirt. We had to be careful to have the logo the right side up!

After that we used the squeegee to wipe ink over the surface.

We lifted the frame slowly for the big reveal...

Now that our t-shirts are printed we need to allow them to dry. If we want to keep the design on the t-shirts they will need to be heat set.

We are going to enjoy wearing the t-shirts when we film our jingle next week!

Lantern Riddles

Riddles are sometimes written on the lanterns. Ms James shared some Lantern Riddles with us today. We managed to solve them. Can you?

Daffodil Day - reminder

Just a quick reminder that we will have daffodils for those of you who bring in a donation tomorrow.  Money donated goes to the Cancer Society.

Chinese Mooncake Festival Celebration

Kate's mum shared some information with us about the Chinese Mooncake Festival. She explained that one of the special traditions she remembers doing since she was a child is to carry lanterns around. We decided to make lanterns too!  We decorated them with patterns then walked around the classroom with them!

She taught us a Chinese poem about the Mooncake Festival Night. It tells of how every family watches the bright shiny moon as they enjoy the mooncakes. Ms Tan will teach us this poem over the next few days.

Look at the mooncakes. They look just like the full moon.

The mooncakes are filled with lotus paste and each has two egg yolks in it. Some of us had our first taste of mooncakes.

We enjoyed making lanterns, trying mooncakes and learning a poem in Mandarin. A big 'Thank You' to Kate's mum for spending the afternoon with us and the interesting tasting mooncakes, Claire's Nana for finding the poem for us and Claire's Dad for the YouTube clips on Mooncake Festival.

Finishing off our work

We finished off some activities today.

Some of us finished colouring in our 'car' glasses. (We will show you what they are when they finished!)

Some if us finished our Pete the Cat shape picture, and the fast finishers made some shakers. We put grains if rice inside a Ping pong ball, then taped spoons around it to form a handle.  We will use the shakers in our jingle.

Shape of the moon

We read some information about the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival. We learnt that the Chinese celebrate when the moon is full. We learnt that the shape of a full moon is called a sphere. We are showing you what a sphere looks like.

Does it make sense?

The Elephants, Monkeys and Zebras have been thinking about things that don't make sense. Miss Bland read their stories today in Reading time and made deliberate mistakes. The children had to stop her when it didn't make sense, then direct her to re-read!  We had a lot of laughs!

Drumming

We made a lot of noise when we visited Mrs Sadgrove this morning. Check us out playing drums and other percussion instruments.

Letter testing & number recognition test

Our teacher has tested us on our letter recognition. Most of the class know all the letter names of the alphabet now.

Here are the results of our number identification testing done this week. It shows that some children are still a bit stuck on recognising teen numbers.

The teachers will send home a summary of the children's test results in their notebooks this week.

Look for these two notices in your child's bookbag today.
