Emergent Writers

When children begin learning to write they start by writing down the beginning sounds of words. Here is an excellent example of a story written by an emergent writer in Room 22. This writer has written the two dominant sounds that she hears in the word 'soldiers'. She recognises that there is a 'g' sound like giraffe in the word and knows that letter 'j' makes that sound. Our writer writes the beginning of 'are' and the beginning sound of 'marching'.

The next steps for this writer would be to segment the words out so she can hear the individual sounds.
