Best artists

The best illustrators for our poem today were Francine and Dylan!  You both did a super job of using bold colours and making Winnie the Pooh look real!

Yummy buzzy bees

We made some edible bees today!  We used crushed biscuits, cocoa powder, condensed milk and coconut and wrapped the mixture around a marshmallow. Then we added some banana lollies as wings and a black jellybean as a head.

Bug experts visit us

Mr and Mrs Bennett visited us this morning and talked to us about bugs!  We got to see a butterfly and some ladybugs under a microscope!  We were surprised how hairy they are up close!

We loved making some 'bug palaces' and hope to hang them up outside somewhere to attract lots of insects.

Thank you Mr and Mrs Bennett for visiting us and making our day so interesting.

Fancy Feet Day

There were lots of creatively decorated shoes at school today for our 'Fancy Feet Day.'

Max the Pukeko came to help judge the best shoes!

Here we are on our parade...

Melanie reads a story

Melanie read a story so beautifully that it needed to be videoed!  Listen to how expressively she read!

Trip to Westlynn Garden

We had a happy day buzzing around Westlynn Garden. First we practiced 'The Bee Song' then we got to have lunch. It was great to have a picnic outside with all our friends and the adults who came to look after us. After our lunch we did a scavenger hunt. We had lots of things to find in the garden like: a flower smaller than our fingernail, a seed pod, a feather, a leaf bigger than our hand... The hardest thing to find was a bird's nest!  Luckily the people at the garden had one that they let us take back to school!

We saw some brand new butterflies today. It was interesting to see them use their proboscis (just like a bee) to suck nectar from the flowers.

Acting like bees

Mrs Sadgrove had us acting like bees in the hive today. Penelope was the queen bee. She had to walk around the room and squat every so often to 'lay' an egg. There were some drones who looked after her too!  Some of us were larvae and some were nurse bees!  Some of us had the important job of being guard bees at the entrance of the hive. When we could leave the hive we had to pass through the guard bee's tunnel and fly off to the flowers to get nectar.

Fizz Kids

First block this morning we met Rachel from Fizz Kids. She always brings some fun activities for us to do. Today one of the activities was a throwing and catching game. Our teachers could tell if our hand-eye co-ordination was good if we managed to catch the ball.

No reading homework tonight

We have no Reading homework tonight which is why our bookbags are still at school.

Visitor

Mr Prentice visited us today to take photos of our class doing our work.  We also enjoyed taking him with us to all our great playing places!

Making paper mâché beehives

We had to start our paper mâché beehives again. This time we hope to finish them quickly so we can paint them and hang them up.

Library time

Unfortunately we can't borrow any more books from our school library this year. We can just look at the books in the library.

Hop scotch

We learnt how to play hop scotch this afternoon. It was a bit tricky for some of us to land in the squares and we got a bit wobbly when we had to stand on one foot and pick up our stone!

Our name bugs

We made name-bugs by writing our name on the fold of a piece if paper then cutting around it. When we opened up the paper we could see our bug!

Stories

Here are some of the stories we wrote today.

Dodgeball

This morning we worked really well and very quietly during writing time so we got to go outside and learn how to play dodge ball.

Moving with Fizz Kids

Rachel from Fizz Kids came today with lots of fun equipment. We got to play with it for a little while.  One of our favourite things to do was forward and backward rolls.

Painting with stencils

We painted bee bodies onto our background paintings using the stencils we made.  It was hard to hold the stencil down and paint at the same time!

Clever readers

Well done to these children who learnt all their words

Best illustrators for Week 6

Look!  Lots of children are doing excellent illustrating these days!  Well done to these five...

We like your choice of colours.
We like that you didn't go over any lines and colored in all the white spaces.
We like the bold colours in your pictures.

Student of the week

Congratulations Aaron C!  Your teachers are impressed with your enthusiasm for learning as well as how you support your classmates.

Recording our song

Mrs Sadgrove helped us record 'The Bee  Song' today. We had to keep our feet and hands very quiet during the recording so only our voices would be recorded through the microphone.

New playground

The new junior school playground was finished today!  We want to come to school early tomorrow to have a play on it!

The rule for our new playground is that we are not allowed to walk on or in the dirt.

Symmetry in our faces

We looked at a picture of our face and saw that we are symmetrical. Our teacher gave us a photo of half of our face and we drew the other part.

Playing in the trees

It is so good for us to build our upper body strength by climbing and swinging! Our favourite place for that today was in the big trees!

Ladybugs

During the week we have been reading a book that explains how to make a ladybug from paper. Today we had the chance to make one!

Outdoor instruments

Some outdoor instruments have been installed in our playground. At lunchtime today Lachlan was having a great time on the vibraphone!

Compliments

It's always lovely to be complimented!  Today our caretaker walked into our classroom and said "Your classroom is so interesting!"  That made us smile.

I wonder if you can give a compliment today and make someone else smile too.

Greetings in Te Reo Maori

Whaea Lois is helping us learn how to greet others in Te Reo Maori.

Here is the little song that is helping us learn what to say.

Tena koe.  Hello to one.
Tena korua. Hello to two.
Tena kotou. Hello to all.
Haere mai everyone.
Welcome everyone.

Reading Caterpillar

Check out the Reading Caterpillar. It has just been updated to reflect the results of the children's Reading tests which they had last week. If you have any questions about it please talk to the teachers.

Parts of a bee

We did an activity to help us remember the parts of a bee. First we made the class example, then we made our own.

Symmetry

For Maths today we cut shapes with 2 lines of symmetry.  To get two lines of symmetry we have to fold paper twice!

Caleb talks about Samoa

Caleb has just come back from a holiday in Samoa. He spoke about the turtles he saw there. He brought a carved one to show us.

Music with Mrs Sadgrove

This morning we practiced 'The Bee Song' with Mrs Sadgrove. She played the guitar, Miss Bland played the keyboard and we sang!  Tomorrow we are going back to the Music Room after lunch to record the song!

After we practiced 'The Bee Song' we sang some Christmas songs. We are going to learn 'Silent Night' in English and Maori!

Magical symmetry

We learnt about symmetry today. We had to hold a piece if paper in half, then cut a shape on the fold. We learnt that the folded line is called a line of symmetry. Look at our pictures below and find ...

An Easter egg
A Christmas cracker
A crown
A tower
A hat
A beehive
