Assembly Awards

Congratulations to the students in the Learning Hub who received awards at last Fridays Assembly. Keep up the good work.

Highlights

Halving

Some of us are learning what halving means. We put 8 counters in the middle of a sheet and learnt how to share them equally. In this way, we could really understand what doubles and halves are.

Half of 12 is...

Half of 8 is...

At the Library

At the library Room 21 listened to this interesting story:

At the end of the story, the raccoon boy did something special for his mum because it was Mother's Day.

We learnt that Americans use the word 'mom' while we use 'mum.'

We love exploring the library shelves to find interesting books!

Taking turns

It is important to practice sharing, and taking turns. Room 21 had the perfect opportunity to do that when Amelia showed us her special interactive piano. Watch some of us taking turns!

Compliment Circle

Today Room 21 had a compliment circle. We sat together and said something about ourselves that we are proud of, and then gave a compliment to the person next to us. We felt so good afterwards!

Teamwork

For Math today, we worked together as a team to time ourselves completing a variety of tasks. In one activity we each had to take turns to say a sentence. Initially it took 38 seconds but when we tried it again it took 31 seconds! Some of us clapped rhythms and we each took turns to repeat it. The second time we repeated the rhythm we were faster! Practice does make us better!

Poem work

Here is one of the poems we have been working on this week.

Learning about echoes

Miss Bland's Reading group were reading a book today about sounds. In it, they learnt about echoes and that they are made by sound bouncing off hard surfaces. It was interesting to learn that many animals rely on echoes to help them know where to move. Watch this short video to learn more!

Highlights

Learning a new word

Room 21 children learnt the meaning of...

They learnt that tempo refers to the speed of the music. To make it easy to remember, two students were selected to play fast and slow sounds while their classmates moved around the room according to the speed.

Investigating strings

Roxana brought in her violin and we learnt that you can make sounds on a violin by plucking the strings with your fingers and by sliding the now over the strings.

Josh noticed that the four strings on the violin are different thicknesses which is what makes the higher or lower pitches. Roxana told us that the thinnest string makes the highest sound while the thickest string makes the lowest sound.

Displaying our artwork

The Hub children are finishing off their artwork this week. Our artwork was inspired by sound waves. We used the computer programme 'Audacity' to create a sound wave. This inspired a sound wave made from wire. Students used a staple gun to attach the wire to their painted canvas. Here is the display of art from Room 21 students...

Peter and the Wolf

Some students watched the story 'Peter and the Wolf' yesterday on a video, and today they wrote about it.

Here are two students reading their stories to the class.

Here are a few of the stories that were completed this morning:

Peter was in the forest and he saw a butterfly, a duck, a bird, and a cat. Then the grandad came and grabbed Peter's hand. The wolf was taken to the zoo.
By Ethan

Peter went into the forest. The forest was full of trees. Surprise!  A big wolf came! Peter ran all the way home. Peter's heart was beating fast. The hunters took the wolf away to the zoo.
By Lola

Peter went to the forest and his grandpa got scared because there was a big, bad wolf. The hunters killed the animals and the wolf ate up the duck. The duck didn't die. It was still alive in the wolf's tummy. When it went to the zoo it was attached to a stick. The hunters were matching into the zoo. They were loud.

A free event

This term we are exploring sound and how it is made. You may like to explore this more this coming weekend, as a family. The free event is STRIKE: Drums and Rhythm, and will be held in the city.

Learning through games

Some of us are playing Math games to practice learning doubles. We think that we are getting much better at remembering what the doubles are. The games are definitely helping us learn!

Music with Mrs Sadgrove

Room 21 went to Music with Mrs Sadgrove this morning. This meant that some children missed a Reading session today.

Mrs Sadgrove taught the Room 21 children how to play some rhythms on some instruments. Afterwards, the class sang songs and then had a picnic in the Music Room!

Writing challenge

Some of us had a big writing challenge today. We were asked to write similes to describe ourselves. First we wrote a list of describing words ('wow' words) that described ourselves, then we thought of something else that had the same quality.

Here are some of our most interesting sentences (and a few crazy ones as well!):

I am as quiet as a tiny mouse. (Campbell)

I am as happy as a gymnastics girl or boy. (Fleur)

I am as brave as a dad. (Yeshaya)

I am as mad as a gorilla. (Josh)

I am as massive as a 4 wheel drive. (Ethan)

I am as grumpy as my mum. (Jiya)

I am as happy as a monkey. (Vansh)

I am as bouncy as a kangaroo. (Roxana)

I am as beautiful as a swan. (Roxana)

I am as happy as a lovebird. (Lola)

I am a brave as a soldier. (Devashree)

I am as silly as a monkey. (Sophie)

I am as freaky as a zombie. (Lola)

I am as brave as a lion. (Brianna)

I am as fancy as a queen. (Lola)

I am as athletic as a ballerina. (Mia)

I am as happy as a koala. (Lucas D)

I am as freaky as a monster. (Maddisyn)

I am as patient as a taxi driver in a traffic jam. (Devashree & Miss Bland)

It was fun to listen to hear some of our friends read their similes to us.

Music that intrigued

Room 21 students watched a music video today that really intrigued them. In it, a car played lots of musical instruments! Watch this video to see what we mean.

Progress on our painting project

Most of us helped to attach a little hanger to the back of our painting project today. This is so it can be put up on the wall in our classroom when we've finished putting the finishing touches to our artwork.

Doubles

We've been playing a fun game to practice doubles. A number comes up on the screen and we must say the double of the number as fast as we can. After an amount if time passes we check how many correct answers we made out of all the attempts. We improved our score from 16/16 to 18/19 today!

Unusual sound

/ng/ is a strange sound that is often affected by other vowels. Room 21 students thought about the word that is made when an 's' is put in front of each of these word endings.

First block

While some students did Writing in the first block, others spent time in the library.

If we didn't go to the library today, we can go on Thursday. Of course, we can exchange books during our lunch breaks too.

Pop stars Disco

Quite a few of us attended the Ara Teina disco this evening. We dressed up as pop stars!
