Litter-less lunch report

22 of us had litter-free lunches today.

Learning Maori words

We learnt two Maori words today. Do you know the meaning of 'kai' and 'aporo'?

Here we are playing a game outside to help us remember our two new words.

Counting to 100

We use our hundreds board to practice counting to 100.

Story writing

We wrote our own stories today about our poppy artwork. We tried to write all by ourselves!  Most of our class could sound out words and write down the ones we hear.

Morning run

Warm up time prior to our run.

Visiting our WW1 artwork

We took a walk to see our school's World War 1 commemorative artwork. We were interested to see the number 100 on some if the poppies. Some of us remembered that it is 100 years ago that the war happened.  We learnt that WW stands for World War.

When we looked at the images on the poppy petals we noticed pictures of soldiers, war planes and graves. We also saw two different peace symbols on the artwork.

Here is our Shared Story.

Litter-less lunch report

Today 20 of us had litter-free lunches today!

Reading numbers on tens frames

Some children are learning to read numbers on tens frames instantly. The group that was learning today had this worksheet to practice reading the numbers.

'write the room'

One Math group learnt how to do a 'Weite the Room' activity this afternoon. Normally we walk around the room finding the questions to answer but today the questions were placed on the floor. The children had to write their answers on a recording sheet.

Letter b

We are working on writing letter b correctly. We must make sure we start in the right place and keep the letter the right size.

Math with the Rectangle group

This Math group is learning to instantly recognise the numbers on dice. First they practiced saying the number they rolled.

Next we played dominoes.

Last of all we raced each other to find the dice number the teacher called out.

This clever girl realised that the number 6 can be inverted to become a 9!

Same but different

We had to find the word 'look' in our poem.  The word look can be written in different ways. See how the word is the same but some letters are written differently?

Math outside

Yesterday we did Math outside!  We had to draw pictures on the courts using chalk!  When our teachers and friends came by we had to tell them the names of the shapes we used.

Alex drew a picture of Mr Crutch wearing his war medals!  What shapes are his medals?

Road Safety

Constable Carl visited us this morning and we learnt how to cross at the crossing safely. He taught us that we need to look both ways before we cross.

We watched two road patrollers set up the lollipop signs at the school crossing.

If the school patrol stop sign is out we cannot cross.

The road patrollers wait until the traffic passes before putting the signs out.

When we cross the street we continue to look both ways.

Look left and right.

A rubbish truck came by and we watched it collecting the rubbish.

Our road patrollers are taking the signs back to school.

If there are no road patrollers on duty we can still cross the road, but we need to be extra careful to look and listen before crossing. It is always safer to cross with an adult.

This is what we learnt today:

Corin - I learnt that we need to look both ways before crossing the street.

Charlotte - I learnt that we should hold an adult's hand while crossing the street.

Kaylah - I learnt that we must listen for cars when crossing the road.

Kerisha - I learnt how to understand the hand signs of the road patrollers.

Spiders

We have some spiders at school!

Bella is a poisonous spider!  Watch out!  Maddie is a daddy-long-legs and Claire is a baby-long-legs!

Litter-free lunches report

Today we had 21 litter-free lunches in our class. That's a great effort!

War medals

Mr Crutch, who helps the teachers with computer problems, let us look at his war medals. He has some medals that he earned when he was a Peace-Keeper. Mr Crutch said that military personnel earn a medal each time they serve 30 or more days during a campaign. Mr Crutch has 5 medals. His father served during World War 2 and he earned 7 medals.

Mr Crutch wears his medals to ceremonies such as the one we had this morning. He wears his own medals on his left side, over his heart, and wears his father's medals on the other side. When Mr Crutch wears his father's medals it feels as though his dad is with him.

Rowan and Sydney had the chance to put on Mr Crutch's jacket to feel how heavy the medals are.

Mr Crutch has 5 medals and his dad got 7. How many medals are there all together?

We learnt that we can store the 7 in our head because it is the larger of the numbers, then we can count on 5 more.

Choosing a litter-free option

What is better for the environment, a plastic yoghurt container that is only used once or a reusable container filled with yoghurt?  Our class chose the reusable container.

Letter of the week

This week we are learning the sound of letter 'b.'  We brainstormed all the 'b' words we know then we looked at pictures of objects and coloured the ones starting with 'b.'

Ducks liking school

When we were outside playing a game a family of ducks appeared outside Room 20. One of the teachers tried to shoo them away but they kept on quacking, begging to come in. The teacher had to close the door to keep the ducks from getting in!  Perhaps the ducks like school and need a classroom of their own!

Sweet treat

Claire brought some cute baby muffins to share with the class today. They were yummy!

Reading with the Lions

When the Lions Reading group worked with the teacher today they learnt a new skill. They had to find little words inside longer words.

Here is the book we read today.

Here is the little word we found inside the word 'gardener.'

If we can find little words inside longer words we will be able to read more complicated texts quicker.
