The plants of Christmas

This week Room 21 have made rascally reindeer using twigs. Each day after the children go home they hide in the classroom! When the children come to school they look for all the rascally reindeers!

One of them hid in the sprig of holly.

We learnt that holly has spiked leaves and that red berries appear during winter. Lucas B wanted to know if humans could eat the berries. One of us thought that since the berries are red that they must be poisonous. It turns out that if humans eat the holly berries they will vomit or have diarrhea, but they are safe for birds to eat!

We also learnt that there are other special Christmas plants - poinsettias, Christmas lillies and the pohutukawa tree, New Zealand's Christmas tree!
