'The Red Poppy'

We read a story called 'The Red Poppy' which was set in World War 1 in a desolate field with a small patch of poppies in the middle of no man's land.

Jim was hurt in an explosion and as a result fell into the crater made by a bomb. In the crater he found an enemy soldier looking at him. When the soldiers realised they were both hurt they worked together to help each other be rescued.

When the rescue dig Nipper arrived the enemy soldier gave Jim paper, pencil and a red poppy to put into the dog's pouch. Jim sent Nipper back to his comrades in the hope that he would get help. Not long afterwards help did arrive and both men were rescued. Jim won't forget that enemy soldier that helped save his life. He won't forget Nipper or the red poppy.

After our story we drew poppies onto red paper and pasted them onto our wreath so we can remember soldiers who died in the war.
