Mr Beekeeper

A beekeeper visited us today and brought a hive to show us. It was so interesting to watch the bees busily working together. Some of them were even carrying rubbish out of the hive. 

The beekeeper brought a bee suit and tools to show us. 

We smelt some wax. It smells like honey!

Here are some things we learned:

Isabel - candles are made from wax, which comes from bees. 

Dylan - a tool called a smoker is used to calm bees down. 

Braden - bees carry rubbish eg squashed larvae out of the hive and drop it far away from it. 

Bella - if a bee dies inside the hive, two bees will carry it out. 

Noah - the queen lays a special egg that turns into the next queen bee. Royal Jelly is fed to queen bee pupae.
